Vitamin D is important for bone, teeth, and muscle health. The main sources of vitamin D are diet and sunlight.

The advice in Scotland is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement, especially during the winter months.

You can improve the amount of vitamin D you’re getting from your diet by making sure you are eating a balanced diet; including oily fish (salmon, herring and mackerel), egg yolks, red meat, fortified cereals (the cereal box will tell you if it has added vitamin D), soya products and spreads.

You can buy a vitamin D supplements over the counter at a pharmacy, most supermarkets, or whole food shops. Most multivitamins also contain vitamin D.
